Pick of the Week
The Substance
The filmmaker's unflinching commentary examines the oppressive nature of feminine aesthetics along with the feared consequences of growing older. Demi Moore presents a brilliant acting turn as Elisabeth, a 50-year-old celebrity forced into starring in an aerobics show on TV. Forced aside due to her deceitful superior Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she seeks out a secretive and gruesome treatment known as the Substance. This produces a youthful duplicate portrayed by Margaret Qualley, resulting in a progressively toxic connection between the two. Friday 17 October, Paramount Plus

Presence Film
The acclaimed director tests his film-making abilities through this nifty paranormal narrative captured wholly from the viewpoint of the spirit. When a household including mother Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe moves into their fresh home, the camera – representing the ghost – tracks their movements. The daughter appears aware of the poltergeist, and it looks like protective of her. But why? It's a fun idea that doesn't outstay its welcome, with a twist that could catch you off guard. Saturday 11 October, multiple showings, Sky Cinema

The Black Phone
Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller remains effective even without a sequel. Located in 1970s Colorado, multiple kidnappings has made the youth frightened. When Finney is taken by the kidnapper and imprisoned in a basement, he anticipates a fatal end. However, the old telephone in the room keeps ringing, with eerie communicators providing assistance, and the prophetic visions from his sibling Gwen may be his salvation. A genuinely scary movie. This Dramatic Portrait
In the battle between spirituality and money, it's a knockout win for Mammon in Michael Showalter's brilliantly over-the-top true story about the fallen televangelist and her criminal husband. Garfield plays the greedy Jim, who states early on, “God does not want us to be poor,”. He and Tammy Faye commence capitalizing on the American public's Christian beliefs. It's a riot of bad interior design, bad makeup and bad faith, though the lead actress succeeds to present Tammy Faye as a sympathetic figure. Tuesday 14 October, 1.15am, on Film4
